Daniel Dörr was born in Sonnenberg (Hessen) circa 1789 and he died in Vienna on 4 Jan 1837. In 1817 he applied for a permit to build fortepianos in Vienna and he received his license the same year. His workshop was located auf der Wieden, Haupstraße Nr. 242. Daniel Dörr had a very successful business that was continued by his son Wilhelm Dörr and his grandson Karl Dörr, who continued to make instruments into the 20th-century. This instrument is triple strung throughout the scale and the lowest strings are brass. The same configuration is used by Conrad Graf for his six-octave instruments. In its scaling and construction with double gap spacers the instrument shows the influence of the grand fortepianos built by Nannette Streicher. Two fortepianos by Daniel Dörr are preserved at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
